So, what factors are there to consider when choosing a new dining table?

Shape

Firstly, shape is important.  Rectangular, round and square tables all have their own strengths, as do extending tables – but which will suit your home best?

Rectangular tables

Rectangular dining room tables like the Halstein are a classic choice.  Not only do they offer a bit more elbow room than a square or round table, they also have plenty of impact thanks to their imposing size.  They do require a bit more space, however – often a rectangular dining room table really will require a dining room to contain it!

Round and square tables

If you're stuck for space, a round or square dining table might be right for you, fitting easily into most kitchens.  A round dining table like the Farnborough round pedestal table is great for making conversation over dinner and looks fantastic in a farmhouse style kitchen.

Extending dining tables

The next factor to consider is the style of your dining table.

• Go for a chunky rustic dining table for a country house feel.
• A white dining room table, either finished in limed oak or with a painted white base, is hugely popular for a contemporary or French farmhouse style kitchen, especially with tapered or turned legs or a farmhouse style pedestal base.
• Try a reclaimed wood dining table for a rugged, distressed look, ideal for industrial style furnishing when coupled with metal legs.

Materials

Dining tables also come in a variety of materials, and it's worth considering practicality as well as style when choosing between them.

Wooden dining tables

Wooden dining tables remain extremely popular and look great in both modern and traditional settings.

• An oak dining table has a stunning woodgrain and often comes in a lacquered, hand waxed or oiled finish.  The Winchester small extending dining table features a hand waxed finish.
• A pine dining table comes at a better price point than oak but is still sturdy.  It's also available in a wider range of colours since it's a good wood for staining.
• A reclaimed table is resilient because it's made using old wood, making it less likely to split.  If you're looking for something eco-friendly with history behind it, reclaimed wood may be right up your street.
• A painted table suits contemporary style dining perfectly.  A cream, grey or white dining table will match other furnishings with ease.

Non-wood finishes

Although most of our tables are wood, some are made from other materials and are designed to really make an impression with guests.

• A marble or glass dining room table is sleek and smart – ideal for a modern style home.
• A concrete top is a brilliant choice for a more industrial look, as with the Rockhampton.

Style versus practicality

Another thing to consider when selecting a dining room table is practicality.  Here are a few things to consider.

• Wooden dining tables are very family friendly, being quick and easy to clean.  An oiled or waxed top is generally more water-resistant than a lacquered top – an added bonus that protects against spills – although the oil or wax may need to be reapplied from time to time.
• Glass and marble dining tables look brilliant but can also be higher maintenance, requiring a bit more elbow grease to keep pesky fingerprints at bay.
• If you're hoping to find something easier to move, a pine dining table is very lightweight.  Stone and marble tops are the hardest to budge since they are much heavier than wooden alternatives.
• Glass dining room tables should be handled with care.
